about

Drawing from the same deep well that bought about 2016’s amazing Umbra, Perch return with another set of idiosyncratic rock ear worms. If you need them, the requisite sign posts leading to Polvo or Pavement style college rock via Television’s theatrical post punk are all in evidence vis a vis the ‘sound’ of this record but as any truly interesting and honest band of this century ought to, Perch stand out on their own amidst a climate of ubiquitous, generified rock music. Anyone fortunate enough to have seen the band live recently will no doubt recall much of this album from various concert iterations over the last 12 months; where shimmering and instantly memorable guitar work weaves in and out of itself over a persistently vibrant rhythm section all bolstered by a lyrical narrative which calls upon the fantasy and esotericism of 70’s rock minus any trite, retrograde posturing. Like Umbra before it, the songs gathered under No Step formulate their own small world within which the listener can endlessly immerse themselves; you may never quite decode or fully understand it but it’ll always be a beautiful place to live. - Duncan Harrison, Broker
