Perch is taken from an old measuring unit that varied in size across Europe.
"One day Chris Mitchell (A.K.A. Perch) contacted Spencer and I, asking us to make a band. It was in the days of Myspace. We hadn't met him yet.
His profile was named, 'Perch' and contained some of the songs here on this tape. Spencer thought they were great. I did too.
We never made the band, but we didn't forget Perch and his songs. They were spacious - comfortably so - almost minimal. Each one had its own character, but they were all unified in their atmosphere, in the cool relaxation of their slow, off kilter guitar lines that meandered around between tonality and its evil twin. They had a feel that was as laid back as it was emotional. They developed in unexpected ways and with far ranging dynamics that made them textured and deep. Open euphoric sections would often break out into heavy, grinding riffs with driving backbeats full of cymbals and thick, crunch distortion. Most strikingly, the songs were so seamlessly put together in their endless flow of memorable passages and layered guitars, that they seemed almost classical in their construction.
'These songs are so composed!' I said. And Spencer agreed.
When we eventually met him - when we played with his other band, Fat Bicth - we told him how much we liked the Perch stuff. He thanked us.
Then Spencer released a tape of the Perch songs and I wrote this."
